  • I think you need to be exposed to the skill set of most college graduates today. They are not required to take anything more than a basic math class to get a Bachelor's degree. The writing courses are actually pretty remedial, concentrating on sentence structure and grammar.

  • I would have liked the article to address this issue instead of just relating sad stories. It offered no solutions to the students or discussion of the broader repercussions to the economy of a generation in such debt with such poor employment prospects.

  • I think the massive loan debt is due in part to the ability of students to borrow money for expenses other than tuition. One poster is 30k in debt for a $6,000 dollar certificate from community college. If money borrowed only went to tuition, the total loans due would be much lower.

  • The sad thing is that Sgation , and most of these students profiled in the NYT piece, would have been better off running up these non tuition expenses on credit cards. Then they could have been discharged in a bankruptcy.

  • I wonder if that statistic is still true today when colleges graduate people who cannot spell, cannot write and have poor basic math skills. I think my mother's high school education was more thorough than my son's BS degree.

  • In order to compete, colleges feel they have to provide state of the art dorms, gyms and other facilities. (But not good food- the food is uniformly pretty terrible.)
